Hi everybody,

Rackspace Hosting has offered the Xen.org community to host xen.org
services and we have started migration last week. The expectation is
that all services will be migrated by Nov the 21st. There will be a
number of services where there may be short downtimes. These will be
announced in due course.

Xen.org has already been migrated.

We have a new MediaWiki (in testing) and we will be retiring the old
MoinMoin Wiki. For now, you can check out the new Wiki on
http://new-wiki.xen.org. Note that only a few pages have been migrated
so far and I played with the categories.

The expectation is that
- Pages marked as "Keep" in http://tinyurl.com/78fry5y will be migrated
first
- The old Wiki will become read-only and we also will publish converted
markup for the old Wiki. Test snapshots of these can be found at
http://new-wiki.xen.org/old-wiki/ &
http://new-wiki.xen.org/old-wiki-converted/ - most pages appear to
translate fairly nicely, except those with images and macros
- Some pages, such as
http://wiki.xen.org/xenwiki/VirtualPrivateServerProviders may be
migrated to the static xen.org site (TBD)

We intentionally do not want to wholesale migrate all content as so much
is out-of-date. The move to the new Wiki
The detailed timing (i.e. exactly when we will switch off the old
instance off is still to be determined). But it will have to be before
Nov 21st. Note that you can already sign up as users: we will not
migrate MoinMoin users.

We will leave the look and feel as a basic Media Wiki for now, but will
make improvements and install additional plug-ins, etc. in due course.

I will let you know more on the timing on the other services on Wednesday

Regards
Lars

Great news!

Moin-Moin always make me feel dumb during navigation. Mediawiki is much
more suitable for knowledge storing and representing under categories
(and navigation templates).

Jon updated the repos, so the XCP 1.1 kernel is here:

Hi list,

Recently I had some major issues importing guests from VMware into XCP via
XenCenter and found very little support on the subject (I even posted to
xen-users and got no replies)
I finally discovered that XCP 1.1 is missing the TransferVM package, after
pulling it off the Citrix XenCenter ISO and installing it on my XCP server
everything now runs smoothly.

So I'm now wondering, why is the TransferVM not included with XCP 1.1 and
will it be included in XCP 1.5 ?

Regards,
Jordan

Hi,

I wanted to let everybody know that we will be hosting a DevRoom
together with other projects at FOSDEM. The room is organized by Thierry
Carrez (Openstack), Renzo Davoli (Universoità di Bologna) and me (Xen)
and it will be a large room, which we will have for two days instead of
the usual 4 hours.

More on FOSDEM: see http://fosdem.org/2012, Brussels Feb 4-5
Other DevRooms, see http://fosdem.org/2012/devrooms_for_2012

More details will follow

Regards
Lars

Hi,

just to let you know that I migrated most high priority XCP pages to the
new wiki: the pages can be found at
- http://new-wiki.xen.org/wiki/Category:XCP

The rest will follow in due course, but you may want to review some of
the pages, check categorization or migrate some more pages. I won't be
able to work on this for the next two weeks.

Regards
Lars

Hi,

Given that the last Xen Document day was a real success, I wanted to
propose another Xen Document day. Ideas of what to work on:
- Continue some of the work stared by the dev community (more man pages,
etc.)
- Clean up pages in the new Wiki
- I am also happy to be on stand-by to help anybody who wants to know
how to use the new Wiki effectively

To be honest, I'm not sure what was the original reason for excluding
the TransferVM from the first release of XCP. I think that it may have
been excluded just to keep the iso size down, but perhaps it wasn't open
source at the time.

Regardless, it's open source now, and it's pretty useful to have on an
XCP system. I've filed a bug against XCP 1.1 for this issue, and we
should include it in XCP 1.5.

Thanks Mike, it's good to know the package is open source and we aren't
breaking any rules by installing it manually on XCP.
For the record, the transfer-vm rpm is 3.64 MB so it should be a breeze to
include on the iso without bloating.
Until then, I have added a little entry on importing it into XCP at
http://new-wiki.xen.org/wiki/XenCenterXCP

Hello,

It is strange. There is no output and the imported VM (template) is not
visible with "xe vm-list" or "xe template-list". The file is an exported
template.

What do I miss? Thank you in advance for any hints.

Regards, mark

Hello,

For some reason I can't import locally exported VM templates on XCP 1.1
or XenServer 6 (s. attached files).
There is no output from "xe vm-import ..." CLI command.

What do I miss? Thank you in advance for any hints.

regards, Mark

Hello,

I have tried to use VM template of Solaris 10 from XenServer 6 on XCP
1.1. It doesn't work (details are in attachment).

Is there somewhere a collection of proven [PH]VM templates for XCP 1.1
for such OSes like:
- ubuntu 11.10
- Solaris 10 / Solaris 11
- CentOS 5.7 / CentOS 6
- RHEL 6

Thank you in advance for any hints.

regards, Mark

Hi,

I've added some more unit tests to xen-api-libs which can be run at build t=
ime:

https://github.com/djs55/xen-api-libs/commit/75d9fb555e40700d6b959c116d64c6=
03767b74cb

I've also added a "make test" target to the makefile which is invoked as pa=
rt of the RPM build. I encourage everyone to (i) design their code to be te=
stable; (ii) add some unit tests where the effort is worth it; and (iii) ho=
ok 'em in to the "make test" target. When deciding whether a particular tes=
t is worth it or not, I try to imagine myself refactoring the code in about=
a years time, when I've forgotten how it all works :)

Cheers,
Dave

Sorry to leave you hanging for a few days. The problem here is that the
VM.suspend_SR field is new to the API, and isn't present in XCP 1.1. The
version of XenCenter you're using is for XenServer 6.0, which has the
new API field. Here is a mapping of XCP/XenServer version numbers:

 XCP | XenServer | Codename
----------------------------------
1.0 | 5.6.1 "FP1" | Cowley
1.1 | 5.6.1 "SP2" | Oxford
1.5* | 6.0.0 | Boston
1.6* | 6.1.0* "SP1" | Tampa*

* Unreleased version; names and numbers may change

(Note to self: this should probably be on the wiki somewhere...)

I think that your best bet is to install the XenCenter that corresponds
to XenServer 5.6.1 SP2 and use that with XCP 1.1. Or you can use
OpenXenManager[1][2], though I admit that it's nowhere near as polished
as XenCenter.

XCP 1.1 final had no changes from RC, they are exactly the same. Could this h=

Mike,

Great matrix but I'm not sure I follow your logic since XenCenter 6 can
manage any version of XenServer, at least it appears to work fine for any
version from 4.1 through 6.0 as well as XCP 1.1, as long as you have
the xpi version override hack installed and have rebooted the toolstack on
your compute nodes. I use XenServer 6 to manage both XenServer 5.5 and
XCP 1.1 pools with no problems.

Here are a couple of references (I couldn't find anything on the Citrix
site, although I know I've seen it):

http://en.community.dell.com/techcenter/virtualization/w/wiki/3071.aspx

Download XenCenter 5.6 and install it onto a suitable client machine. The
new version of XenCenter is suitable for managing older versions of
XenServer, and hence no functionality will be lost.

http://searchsystemschannel.techtarget.com/tip/Installing-Citrix-XenServer-55-and-XenCenter

customer's XenCenter should support. By default, that will be XenCenter
5.5 only, which is compatible with all versions of XenServer from 4.1 on.
In case you want to manage older versions of XenServer as well, make sure
to also select XenServer 4.0.

Unfortunately, when Citrix originally released XCP, they made no effort
to make sure that XenCenter worked with XCP. So while XenCenter works
well with previous versions of XenServer, it doesn't always work well
with XCP, and especially not previous versions of XCP. The
xapi_version_override hack does help, but I'm sure that there are some
cases where it won't.

The GUI team is working to fix some XenCenter/XCP integration issues for
their next release, and the XCP team is working to make versioning
between XCP and XenServer hosts a little more sane. So hopefully this
kind of thing will quietly go away in future releases.

Hope this explains what's going on a little better.

Mike

I was trying to create both windows hvm and Linux pv, as well as the other h=

Hi,

I have found a bug about XenAPI viewer.

I use XenAPI viwer with XCP 0.5 and I never had problem.

Today, I installed XCP 1.1 and I can not use console from XenAPI viewer.

I encounter this java issue :

charger : classe com.citrix.xenserver.console.Initialize.class introuvable.

java.lang.ClassNotFoundException:

Source)

at java.lang.Thread.run(Unknown Source)

Exception : java.lang.ClassNotFoundException:
com.citrix.xenserver.console.Initialize.class

I tried to update Java and Firefox : not solved !

Have you any solution ? Did you know this problem ?

Regards,

Iloyo

Hi,

From my personal experience, XenCenter for 6.x works flawlessly with
XCP 1.1 as long as you fake the XCP version to 5.6.100.
Having a higher version like 5.9 or 6 cause the xencenter to try to
setup the VM.suspend_SR field when you create a VM and
that is not supported by XCP 1.1.

my current setup that works with latest XenCenter:

[root~]# cat /etc/xensource/xapi_version_override
5.6.100

I also stripped PRODUCT_BRAND from the xapi binary.
[root~]# /usr/bin/perl -pi -e 's/XCP/\ \ \ /g' /opt/xensource/bin/xapi

and set BUILD_NUMBER to 0 in /etc/xensource-inventory
BUILD_NUMBER='0'

result:

[root~]# xapi -version
hg_id=
hostname=kiffu-2
date=2011-09-19
PRODUCT_VERSION=5.6.100
PRODUCT_BRAND=
BUILD_NUMBER=0

If you try this, backup your xapi binary first, it's a dirty hack and I
dont want to be
responsible if you break anything :)

Cheers,
Sébastien

The xen.org list server is moving home on Thursday 17th November 2011.

This will be happening during the UK daytime and will hopefully be reasonably seamless. You may find that mailing list options or membership changes may not change as expected during this period.

Any outages will be kept to a minimum - please bear with us while this is taking place.

Thanks

 Andrew
