Hey,

I am happy to introduce Marcos Matsunaga from Oracle to the workgroup.
He will be looking at understanding and figuring out how to make
XenRT (or OSSTest) also do Oracle DataBases.

This way we can leverage the tools to do better testing coverage of
enterprise products and figure out if there are any regressions.

Thank you.

P.S.
He has already used the mailman tool to subscribe himself to the
list.

I do not know if Ian Jackson is on the mailing list, so I included him.
I do not know if Doug Clark is on this list (and do not have an email address for him).

The high level needs I have been using is:

1/2 rack to start, possible 1 rack in the 1st year.
2 servers that have public IPs.
Rest of servers on internal network.
Basic (minimal) server support (hardware install, cabling, RMA, etc.)

I have started the contact to:

 1. Verizon.com (terremark.com).
 2. Csc.com

Are there other major co-loc providers that need to be contacted?

Do we want to use a cheaper "local" co-loc provider?

    -Don Slutz

Right.

During the call last month we discussed a more comprehensive level of
help with software. I think that's really something we are going to
need help with, as we don't have spare effort for this anywhere else.

So, tasks like:
  * routine monitoring and security updates
  * backups
  * basic database admin (postgresql)

I think a provider which is local to one of the companies on the test
WG is likely to provide better service at the same price. They will
be more flexible and helpful. I certainly wouldn't limit it to "big
names".

As you're doing the searching I guess you should probably look near
yourself - which is where exactly ? :-)

Thanks,
Ian.

(As discussed, I think.)

Initial hardware requirements

 Operational servers

  * Two identical mid-range servers with (say) 32G of RAM
Two machines provided in case one dies for some reason.
(Recovery strategy is to have backup of each VM on each
server, and to manually bring up the backup VMs.)
    Full on-site warranty.

    To be used as:

      - firewall / NAT gateway (dom0)
so each has a global internet connection

      - VM host for infrastructure VM(s)
osstest probably wants about three infrastructure VMs
          one for pxe/dhcp/etc.
          one for the database
          one for osstest itself etc.

To be running Debian wheezy with Xen, toolstack xl.

 Test boxes

  * 24 low to mid end test servers, in pairs or quads
    from a variety of manufacturers
and a mix of CPU vendors
      eg 6x Dell (2x R210, 2x R310, 2x something a bit bigger?)
           6x HP equivalent
6x equivalent from another big name vendor
6x no-name servers from supplier(s) local to our colo,

    Minimal warranty

 Infrastructure

  * One server to be a serial port concentrator running sympathy
(for osstest) and/or xen use machinery (for xenrt)
       - with a 32-port serial PCI card (eg Rocketport)
       - ideally two PCI slots
       - can be very low-end
       - full warranty
If this fail catastrophically we replace it with something
similar from a local supplier and restore from backups.
Separate from operational server VM hosts to avoid complicating
VM hosts with hardware support (eg, to avoid PCI passthrough
    of serial port concentrators etc.)

  * One gbit switch for internal network

(As discussed, I think.)

Initial hardware requirements

 Operational servers

  * Two identical mid-range servers with (say) 32G of RAM
Two machines provided in case one dies for some reason.
(Recovery strategy is to have backup of each VM on each
server, and to manually bring up the backup VMs.)
    Full on-site warranty.

    To be used as:

      - firewall / NAT gateway (dom0)
so each has a global internet connection

      - VM host for infrastructure VM(s)
osstest probably wants about three infrastructure VMs
          one for pxe/dhcp/etc.
          one for the database
          one for osstest itself etc.

To be running Debian wheezy with Xen, toolstack xl.

 Test boxes

  * 24 low to mid end test servers, in pairs or quads
    from a variety of manufacturers
and a mix of CPU vendors
      eg 6x Dell (2x R210, 2x R310, 2x something a bit bigger?)
           6x HP equivalent
6x equivalent from another big name vendor
6x no-name servers from supplier(s) local to our colo,

    Minimal warranty

 Infrastructure

  * One server to be a serial port concentrator running sympathy
(for osstest) and/or xen use machinery (for xenrt)
       - with a 32-port serial PCI card (eg Rocketport)
       - ideally two PCI slots
       - can be very low-end
       - full warranty
If this fail catastrophically we replace it with something
similar from a local supplier and restore from backups.
Separate from operational server VM hosts to avoid complicating
VM hosts with hardware support (eg, to avoid PCI passthrough
    of serial port concentrators etc.)

  * One gbit switch for internal network

Test framework

We will use osstest in the first instance, but will concurrently explore wa=
ys of additionally incorporating XenRT, or at least XenRT test cases, into =
it as a longer term aim.

Hardware requirements

See separate email from Ian to TestWG containing details. DonL suggested we=
look at RocketPort 32-port PCI. To get ARM in the lab, Ian proposed that t=
he xen developers in Citrix build out semi-custom cases containing their AR=
M dev boards and ship these to the colo.

Action: Ian to send out detailed hardware requirements to all, all to reply=
with thoughts on what manufacturers and cpu's need to be bought to give us=
 right mix.

Hosting requirements for XenRT (Doug) - the hardware specified by Ian could=
not run xenrt side-by-side with osstest, xenrt requires more memory and po=
ssibly shared storage for ISOs and logs.

Our basic premise should be to build out osstest first and add xenrt capabi=
lity in a later phase, the incremental cost should be low. However, we deci=
ded to buy 32GB RAM infrastructure servers in the first instance to partial=
ly future-proof the lab (the hardware we need appears to be well within bud=
get).

Colo options (DonS):

Do we go with someone big like Verizon, or someone smaller and more local? =
We want a full colo service incl sys admin to do the routine maintenance, b=
ackups etc. Probably the price quoted by a colo provider would include an h=
ourly rate for a sys admin

DonL: will we have a substantial up-front cost (set up etc)? Yes, and will =
drop significantly once into steady-state. If paying the colo provider by t=
he hour for sys admin then this can be catered for.

Action: DonS to continue investigating colo providers large and small, and =
to make proposals / recommendations back to the WG.

AOB

DonL: how do you use xenrt?

Doug: could either tie it to submission gate like osstest, or could set it =
up as a self-service test. Aim would be to allow community to test their ow=
n patches, exploiting the test inventory. Ian: osstest would allow this, if=
 a simple web interface added.

Subject: [Wg-test-framework] Proposed hardware shopping list

(As discussed, I think.)

Initial hardware requirements

 Operational servers

  * Two identical mid-range servers with (say) 32G of RAM
Two machines provided in case one dies for some reason.
(Recovery strategy is to have backup of each VM on each
server, and to manually bring up the backup VMs.)
    Full on-site warranty.

    To be used as:

      - firewall / NAT gateway (dom0)
so each has a global internet connection

      - VM host for infrastructure VM(s)
osstest probably wants about three infrastructure VMs
          one for pxe/dhcp/etc.
          one for the database
          one for osstest itself etc.

To be running Debian wheezy with Xen, toolstack xl.

 Test boxes

  * 24 low to mid end test servers, in pairs or quads
    from a variety of manufacturers
and a mix of CPU vendors
      eg 6x Dell (2x R210, 2x R310, 2x something a bit bigger?)
           6x HP equivalent
6x equivalent from another big name vendor
6x no-name servers from supplier(s) local to our colo,

    Minimal warranty

 Infrastructure

  * One server to be a serial port concentrator running sympathy
(for osstest) and/or xen use machinery (for xenrt)
       - with a 32-port serial PCI card (eg Rocketport)
       - ideally two PCI slots
       - can be very low-end
       - full warranty
If this fail catastrophically we replace it with something
similar from a local supplier and restore from backups.
Separate from operational server VM hosts to avoid complicating
VM hosts with hardware support (eg, to avoid PCI passthrough
    of serial port concentrators etc.)

  * One gbit switch for internal network

Hi all,

am back from holidays and wanted to follow up on action items. So it seems =
the open items are

* Action: Ian to send out detailed hardware requirements to all, all to rep=
ly with thoughts on what manufacturers and cpu's need to be bought to give =
us right mix.
Sent out by Ian, but no comments so far

* Action: DonS to continue investigating colo providers large and small, an=
d to make proposals / recommendations back to the WG.
I think we are still waiting for a concrete proposal

Lars

* review and agree hardware requirements for test lab
* review options for colo and sys admin support

Hi all,

am back from holidays and wanted to follow up on action items.

Lars

* review options for colo and sys admin support

Yes, so that a real cost could be done.

I do feel that we have a good enough statement to get a ball park type
quote.

So far I am still having issues with getting a sales person to respond
from both
Verizon (Terremark) and CSC.

Just some overview data:

Boston, MA, USA:

*Full Rack and Full Cabinet Colocation* -- Qualified local and national
Boston Colocation providers offer open racks and secure cabinets. Full
racks and cabinets are typically supplied with redundant 20 or 30amp
110v (208v as an option) along with a 100Mbps or GIGe port. Full
rack/cabinet pricing starts at $1250 a month.

The State of Virginia (USA) is a hot spot for clients looking for an
East Coast presence.

Secure half cabinets with 15amp power and 10Mbps start at $500 a month.
Full cabinets with 20amp power and 10Mbps start at $800 a month.
Additional 20amp and 30amp feeds will add another $250-300 to your
monthly bill.

*Colocation data centers in the London area:*

No price available on the web from
http://www.quotecolo.com/london-colocation/.

*Where* -- Where can you find server colocation? Server colocation can
be found all over the World. Large telecommunications companies such as
ATT, Verizon, Equinix and Century Link offer colocation services all
over the US and abroad. Local and Regional colocation providers such
Hosting.com, Expedient, Xand, IO and QTS offer colocation space all over
the US in tier 1 cities like Boston, New York, Atlanta, Miami, Dallas,
Denver and Los Angeles. Colocation can also be found in smaller tier 2
cities like Birmingham, Fort Worth, Santa Clara and Tampa but you need
to research a little harder! Check out our free white paper
<http://www.quotecolo.com/top-10-tips-to-finding-the-best-colocation-provider/>on
the ten tips to find a colocation vendor.
