Hi,

I should have mentioned that I'm testing the installation procedure
using a VirtualBox virtual machine.

This problem has nothing to do with apt-get install but is instead
somehow related to the bridged adapter update earlier in the Wiki.
Reverting that change to /etc/network/interfaces removes the problem
(and also makes apt-get run a lot faster.)

Earlier message:
Hi,

(I'm not really a Xen user yet, I'm just going through the beginner's
installation guide on the Wiki:
https://wiki.xenproject.org/wiki/Xen_Project_Beginners_Guide)

I can't install Debian xen-tools because it doesn't complete, it just
starts over again. I suspect that's because the last entry in the list
of packages to be installed is xen-tools.

I think that it's possible to get around the problem by installing the
xen-tools packages individually, but haven't done this yet.

I think that it's possible to get around the problem by installing the
xen-tools packages individually, but haven't done this yet.

some more information is required. What are the two versions (o.k., not
o.k.) of /etc/network/interfaces? What does ip a show in either case?
Did you test connectivity (e.g. ping, DNS, etc.)?

That was my starting point too. :-)

Here as well, some more information is required. What command are you
using to install xen-tools? What is the output of the command?

I don't understand this. As far as I know, xen-tools isn't a meta
package, so how would you install the content of xen-tools individually?

Paul

Hi Frank,

I echo Paul`s questions, but would also just ask you to confirm whether
I understand your setup and exactly what the problem is.

First, am I right to think you`re trying to set up a complete xen
environment, including dom0 (i.e. the hypervisor itself - the
virtualization host) within a VirtualBox virtual machine? So it`s
virtualization within virtualization?

If so, I haven't tried it but conceptually I wonder whether it would be
possible. Xen is a bare metal hypervisor. I think it may expect to be
working with bare metal. I'm sure there are others more knowledgeable
than me on this list who could say more definitively.

Assuming it might be possible though, I get the sense you've installed a
Linux environment (Debian if you're following the instructions) and are
now trying to edit /etc/network/interfaces to match the text in the
Beginner's Guide - i.e. to set up a bridge. When you do and then
restart  networking it no longer works - is that right? If you revert to
the original interfaces file networking is fine?

If that's it, I can see that the virtualized network card presented by
VirtualBox may not mimic a hardware NIC completely enough to support the
bridge.

If so, it`s conceivable that there's a way around it using an
alternative to the bridge like NAT, but it would be helpful if you would
confirm whether the above does describe the problem. Even then, in the
best case it may only get a network connection going, not the rest of xen.

If I've misunderstood something, then maybe the answers to Paul's
questions will help clarify.

David

As David Hill asked first, are you sure you really want to do *this*?

While running a hypervisor on a hypervisor is possible in theory, x86
makes this *extremely* difficult. Starting by running Linux on Xen and
letting Domain 0 take the entire machine is likely similar to the
environment you're thinking of. This is rather more feasible.

This sounds like you're trying to install Xen from source, yet you're
starting from a Debian Linux installation. Are you sure this is what
you desire?

I suspect you might instead want to start looking at Debian's wiki:
https://wiki.debian.org/Xen

I though would suggest starting by running:
`apt install xen-system grub-xen-host`

(the Debian wiki's recommendation of `apt install xen-hypervisor`
leaves the utilities uninstalled and that isn't too helpful)

Once you're a bit futher along, https://wiki.debian.org/PvGrub is rather
valuable (this is why I suggest grub-xen-host).

Recursive virtualization is actually supported under Xen and it works
with some possible glitches. I am running Xen under Xen and I once did
run Xen under VMware workstation and after solving the glitches without
problems.

Proper hypervisor on hypervisor should be indistinguishable from
hypervisor on "bare metal". Similarly an OS running on a hypervisor
*shouldn't* be able to tell the hypervisor is there. x86 makes this
extremely difficult since many instructions behave differently in the
different modes. Certainly there are workarounds, but those glitches
shouldn't be present in the first place.

Compare PowerPC which has a very carefully designed model and full
virtualization is easy. You still want psuedo-devices which don't behave
anything like actual storage devices, but you can readily hide the
processor bits of virtualization.

ARM is a bit in-between. It doesn't have all the hard to simulate quirks
of x86, but does have hard borders between EL0-EL2. As such there are
information leaks, but not nearly as many as x86.

What do you mean by "many instructions behave differently in the
different modes"?

"Hardware virtualization" is actually "hardware ASSISTED
virtualization". Inside a VM, the processor generates traps into the
hypervisor on certain instructions, so that the hypervisor can do its work.

When using recursive virtualization, the virtualization instructions
like VMLAUNCH, VMRESUME on the x86 generate a trap which must be handled
by the hypervisor. This is how recursive virtualization works, handling
these instructions. So recursive virtualization can never be
indistinguishable from normal virtualization.

The glitches exist mainly because recursive virtualization isn't as
widely used as normal virtualization and thus it is also not as
thoroughly tested as normal virtualization. Using Xen, it works quite
good under the given circumstances.

I'm trying to follow as closely as possible
https://wiki.xenproject.org/wiki/ Xen_Project_Beginners_Guide
So, I created a virtual Debian image and follow the steps one by one.

I assumed that the the dom0 is the Debian, since I'm thinking that it's
what starts the hypervisor. I didn't see anything in the tutorial about
doing something different.

I've also tried to follow the tutorial using an old laptop. At some
point I ran into what I've been calling the apt recursion problem.

Mostly the network is fine either way. It's just that apt-get doesn't
work properly. Since I've been able to reproduce the problem now even on
"bare metal" (a laptop ) I don't think that running second level is the
problem. However, running a virtual machine makes it easier for me to
transfer log files. (I now run everything I do as root under script, and
keep the typescript output files.)

Paul: some more information is required. What are the two versions
(o.k., not o.k.) of /etc/network/interfaces? What does ip a show in
either case? Did you test connectivity (e.g. ping, DNS, etc.)?
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
## Old version                   : New version
source /etc/network/interfaces.d : = (unchanged)
                                  : =
auto lo                          : =
iface lo inet loopback           : =
                                  : =
allow-hotplug enp0s3             : =

                                  : auto xenbr0
                                  : iface xenbr0 inet dhcp
                                  : bridge_ports enp0s3

Paul: Here as well, some more information is required. What command are
you using to install xen-tools? What is the output of the command?

Thanks Frank - that clarifies things a lot. In my first message should
have started with something like "Welcome to the world of xen. I hope
we'll be able to help you get it working in your environment."

This is not because I'm any kind of a xen expert at all - much more just
a hobbyist - but I have done the kind of thing you're doing several
times so may have some thoughts that might help.

First, and I can't remember why, but I'm sure I had problems with
apt-get too. Have you tried using apt instead? The commands are quite
similar.

I will check it out on my xen installation tomorrow, but I have used apt
in place of apt-get for enough years that I've forgotten the precise
details. Try that and let us know whether you have any more success.

Second,  the Beginner's Guide is okay at a fundamental level, but does
have some quite old fashioned advice ("burn a CD") and cries out for a
re-write. I'm not sure for example whether pygrub (as opposed to pvgrub)
still works. (I haven't run up an installation from scratch in some
time.) The Guide is quite out of date on pvgrub - it is fully functional
and is preferred to pygrub - too bad the spelling is so similar. The
section on PVH drivers is similarly out of date. Paul Leiber may have
some specific notes on this.

You may wonder at this state of affairs. There was an initiative last
year to completely overhaul the xen documentation but it seems to have
gone a bit dormant lately:
https://xen-project.gitlab.io/people/agvallejo/xen-userguide/index.html

In the meantime we have been muddling along with the documentation as it
is. I'm tempted to try to polish up the Guide as it stands since its
content might inform the re-write even though the plan is to replace it
completely in the near future.

In any case, your feedback about trying out  the Guide as it stands and
any problems you run into will be  helpful to either.

Regards,
David

Hi again Frank,

The problem I had with apt-get was something to do with apt-get update a
few years ago (along with Network Manager and packagekit). apt worked
just fine so I never went back to it. So, probably nothing to do with
your problem.

I notice that the apt-get output you supplied includes "Ign:" at the
beginning of each line, meaning I think that the correct versions of
those packages couldn't be found at the repositories in
/etc/apt/sources.list.

How does sources.list look? Are those repositories accessible from the
machine you're trying this on?

David

Thanks David,

As you implied, the network configuration was the problem, not apt or
apt-get. It turns out that networking is totally kaput when using the
Xen virtual bridge configuration. With that active, it turns out that I
can't even ping xenproject.org. I should've tried some other network
access than apt, but didn't.

All my other virtual machines use static IP, so I'll probably have to
figure out how to use Xen's virtual bridge on top of that.

The problem isn't limited to running under VirtualBox, though. I ran
into a similar problem running on my laptop, but don't remember exactly
which step in the beginner's guide made it happen.

Thanks for your help,
Frank

in my environment which is very similar to yours. That was some time ago
but it's a pretty simple step if remember right.
