Though maybe more experimental, nanomsg (http://nanomsg.org/) could be an 
alternative. The interesting thing being that these are designs that learned 
from ZeroMQ and they have informational RFCs for their "scalability" protocols:

There is at least another independent implementation of the protocols in pure 
Go (https://github.com/gdamore/mangos)
