[Xen-bugs] [Bug 33] New: dom0 support for 'cpufreq' or CPU throttling

http://bugzilla.xensource.com/cgi-bin/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=33

Summary: dom0 support for 'cpufreq' or CPU throttling
           Product: Xen
           Version: unstable
          Platform: x86
        OS/Version: Linux-2.6
            Status: NEW
          Severity: enhancement
          Priority: P2
         Component: Hardware Support
        AssignedTo: xen-bugs@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
        ReportedBy: paul+xen@xxxxxxxxx

Hi,

Linux has a CPU throttling abstraction layer called 'cpufreq', into which
hardware-specific drivers such as acpi-cpufreq (ACPI CPU/clock Throttling) and
p4-clockmod (P4/Xeon cpu/clock throttling) can plug into, so that a user-space
daemon can ramp the clock up/down as system load demands.

This helps keep the Amperage down, particularly with certain 'thirsty' CPUs.

Unfortunately, there does not appear to be any support in Xen (either the
hypervisor or dom0) for this. It would be very useful (and cost efficient / more
environmently friendly) to have.
