Your build error messages are pretty badly garbled.  From what I can see it
looks like you're mixing in C flags from your environment.

Please try to repro against the latest hg of unstable and post complete build
logs.  I've confirmed that unstable is building against GCC4 on amd64 so this
looks to be a debian-specific issue if it still exists.
