The machine has 16GB of memory.  It boots fine with 8 CPUS, 16GB of memory, and
PAE on.  Increasing the cpus is what causes the output in comment #26 to occur
(decreasing memory does not help).

Please note that with PAE OFF, 32 CPUS, 16GB boots fine (although obviously it
cannot use all 16GB with PAE OFF).

It seems to me to be some kind of mixture of PAE and SMP (when the number of
CPUs gets high,~16).

Sorry for the confusion!  Discussing all the variables involved is difficult.
