[Xen-bugs] [Bug 494] New: Linux does not find root device, interface vif could not be connected

http://bugzilla.xensource.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=494

Summary: Linux does not find root device, interface vif could not
                    be connected
           Product: Xen
           Version: unstable
          Platform: All
               URL: http://creme.schottelius.org/~nico/linux/debug/xen/klapp
                    erwachstum/
        OS/Version: Linux
            Status: NEW
          Severity: blocker
          Priority: P2
         Component: Guest-OS
        AssignedTo: xen-bugs@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
        ReportedBy: nico-linux-xen@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Short version: I get

Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)

Long version:

I use Xen3 and patched Linux 2.6.15 from mercurial.
The xen3 and the Linux-2.6.15 domain0 are running fine.

Now if I try to start a Linux 2.6.15 on a freshly installed Debian Sarge
as a guest, I see two errors:

1. vif problem

I create the guest and recieve that error:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[9:52] klapperwachstum:xen# xm create ts
Using config file "ts".
Error: Device 0 (vif) could not be connected. Hotplug scripts not working.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The configuration file 'ts' can be found at
http://creme.schottelius.org/~nico/linux/debug/xen/klapperwachstum/

2. Linux cannot find the root device

In the xenconfig I tried file:/path/to/image and phy:/path/to/image and none
works (see configuration on url above)

I don't really know where the problem is. I think the root device is
specified correctly, the drivers SHOULD be compiled in.

Though I do not see any "xen_block" message in the dmesg of the guest.

What also makes me wonder is that after I issue 'xm create -c ts', there
popups no console. And the system gets 'paused' immediatly.

The I issue 'xm console ts' on another console and then "xm unpause ts".
Than the problem with the root device occurs.

On the host hotplug is installed.

The kernel configurations, dmesg, xend.log can all be found below

http://creme.schottelius.org/~nico/linux/debug/xen/klapperwachstum/

Perhaps I do something wrong, but I tried so long and nobody seems to be able to
help anything further, that's why I open a bug, perhaps it's a real bug.
