[Xen-bugs] [Bug 1588] New: Need method for detecting vmxassist

http://bugzilla.xensource.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=1588

Summary: Need method for detecting vmxassist
           Product: Xen
           Version: 3.0.3
          Platform: x86
        OS/Version: Linux
            Status: NEW
          Severity: major
          Priority: P2
         Component: HVM
        AssignedTo: xen-bugs@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
        ReportedBy: hpa@xxxxxxxxx

I received a bug report from Red Hat that newer versions of Syslinux wouldn't
work on RHEL 5 Xen in HVM mode. I root-caused this bug to vmxassist not
handling the HLT instruction in real mode (HLT causes an exit from V86 mode.)

This is reasonably easy to implement a workaround for: I can busy-wait instead
of HLT. However, this would affect users of all virtualization platforms, not
just the affected versions of Xen. As such, it would be highly useful if there
was a way to detect if vmxassist is (or may be) present.

Any reasonable such method?
