I think the best would be to update binutils. Version 2.14 was released 2003! 
Current version is 2.17.

I didn't tried this out. Maybe uncommenting HAVE_SERIALIZE_DIRECTIVE involves 
other problem which doesn't attract attention because nobody has tried it the 
last time.
