No idea how SuSE-fied your build is, maybe they made a seperate init.d script 
for it, maybe you need a START_XFRD=yes in one of those rc.config files...

try to "grep xfrd /etc/init.d/*"

did you try to "/usr/sbin/xfrd start" ?
