Found the solution though its slightly surprising.

I thought i will share it with the list.

When i compiled the xen kernel i compiled it for the Athlon CPU since thats what i have on my test machine. I today compiled the kernel again with the default Pentium optimised and X worked.

Looks like i spoke too soon. The new kernel wasn't loaded when i tested X. The new kernel is rebooting continously.

Trying a noreboot on the kernel command line...

it still reboots, it happens very fast to can't read it...

will do more tests later and post results.
