If "stable and tested" are the first priorities, I believe NFS has been in use longer than I have been alive. It's not fast, and you may hit locking issues, but it is extremely simple, and if you need help, any UNIX guy that has been around for more than a couple years should be able to help you out.

As I said in a previous post, jumbo frames make a huge difference when it comes to NFS performance; It's still not fast, but it is stable and tested.
