I'd install a kernel, which might not be there in your paravirtual
system, adjust the config, start and see what happens.

You know for sure from reading the docs that save/resume/migrate
doesn't work on hvm, so I guess you don't mean the xen migration, but
that you are going to run the same vm image on another machine,
right?!

In general, I'd not try to copy the vm images (I'd neary never do
that), but store the config I use in an automated installation system,
and just reoinstall with an additional kernel package.
