Thanks a lot to Todd Deshane.

take a look at these. I think my solution was to get
rid of network manager and add in an entry in
/etc/network/interfaces, but there may also be a more
elegant solution that others proposed.

I added the following to my /etc/network/interfaces
auto eth0
iface eth0 inet dhcp

And rebooted the machine. (could have possibly just
started the network services and xend)

Will test some more.
