According to Novell it is possible to do SLES9SP4 on SLES10SP1. It isn't as automated as it probably is in SLES10SP2, but it does work (I have two of them running that I installed before upgrading to SP2 on SLES10). Starting out with an HVM for the install then installing the Xen PV kernel would probably work, too.

If you want a PV SLES9SP4, you will need SLES10SP2.
