Interesting - I've been able to use both xvd* and hd* without a problem under Xen 3.2.  I've never tried sd*, but I'm having trouble understanding why someone would need to do that.

I compiled a domU kernel from vanilla kernel sources.

That kernel didn't seem to support xen devices with the name sda or hda.
They were ALWAYS called /dev/xvda and /dev/xvdb, no matter what i write
in the domU config gile.
