I get the same error:

[root@gpfs-ds1 /]# xclock
Error: Can't open display:

Actually it opens a window that should configure a display, I guess, but when I close it, that's it.
What is sux? (Sorry for my ignorance)

What happens if you run xclock? Same error?

Maybe you need to use sux - to get X working under root?
