Hey, I think I got it!

It was goofing up because I initially used sda and not hda.  Switching  
didn't work...  Until I noticed something.
I'm using vnc, so every reboot, I would lose the connection.  Then I  
would reconnect and get that annoying screen saying: "Windows could  
not start because of a computer disk hardware configuration  
problem...." blah blah.  I found that when I was quicker on the draw  
with issuing my vnc command, that there was a screen before that one  
offering an alternative boot -- I took it, and it is installing now as  
one might expect!
