Yes, SP1 was a pretty bad release of SLES - SP2 is much better.  Hopefully I'll get to try out SLES11 here, soon...

Thanks for all the replies. Seems possible that SLES is my issue.
Thankfully it doesn't happen that often. It was worse on SP1 (don't
remember the xen version). Maybe it will get even better when SLES
catches up some more.
