I haven't done this on Debian but on CentOS I initially ran into some problems.  From what I can gather from the mailing lists is that there is a bug in the makefile for 3.4.0.  So if you run make world it will remove the 2.6.18 source tree and then fail to download it from kernel.org.  Running make dist and make install however works and avoids this behavior.
