Paravirtualization/PV :
- needs special support from the guest OS
- does not need special hardware

Full virtualization/HVM:
- can work with most modern guest OS without any modification
- needs special hardware support (intel VT/AMD-V)

PV guest does not need special hardware support, and can be used on
most modern x86 systems (even netbooks with low-power Intel atoms)
