If you go for debootstrap make sure you're using new enough debootstrap.

debootstrap rpm:
ftp://ftp.funet.fi/pub/mirrors/fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/releases/12/Everything/i386/os/Packages/debootstrap-1.0.10-3.fc12.noarch.rpm

(that one should install to centos5, even when it's for fedora 12)

newer debootstrap versions (1.0.19):
http://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/packageinfo?packageID=5292
