Also, increase the timeout in /etc/default/grub so you get a boot menu, and re-run update-grub. (Note that if you have multiple partiitons you'll need to run 'mount -a' after getting the recovery shell.
If it's using UUIDs, try changing to device names instead. You can change this in etc/default/grub as well. If you can get a grub menu up, at from there you manually tweak the boot params until you get something that works.
