I think I have at have figured out this issue. The main problem was using Symantic sep. Under XP removing sep and disabling windows firewall speed up by a factor of about 8. Doing just one or the other had little affect. Under server server 2003 or 2008 speed went up by a factor of about 2 - 3. Anyone have any recommendations on antivirus for server 2003 and 2008 or a link to some competent unbiased tests? I mostly do linux and deal with windows that much. Thanks for all the help.
