...just as a short addition:

   xm shutdown yourdomain

on the Dom0 (!) should shutdown your DomU too. If your DomU is halted then but 
still exist (see i.e. xm list) you may have to add a

   xm destroy yourdomain.

If your work with the xl alternative, you should find similiar options 
(shutdown, destroy) as well.
