Some versions of the scripts log a more useful to xenstore, so you might
find it there. I thought xend and xl from 4.2 onwards would pick up and
log that string too, I don't know which you are using or on what
version.

If that doesn't help then my usual tactic is to add near top of the
hotplug script:
        exec >>/tmp/hotplug.log 1>&2

and then have a poke and try and figure out what is going wrong, looking
for failed commands etc.
