Have you tried device_model_version="qemu-xen-traditional" in your domU config? I think this should get rid of the emu device and having your normal device behave the way you are used to.

In vif-route you can try to replace the case online with online|add
and offline by offline|remove.

For whatever reason, the command names for the -emu interfaces are different ...
