But cutting out all unnecessary services is always a good thing from the security/stability POV. Good luck with that if your distro uses systemd. I recently found gems such as KDE requiring mysqld because kdepim, which is included in the default KDE package group. I very much doubt it is the only instance of such insanities creeping into distributions.
