If it was possible to reliably autodetect this buggy firmware then I'm
sure that is what would have been done, since it is not possible we are
left with device specific quirks as suggested in that thread.

As that thread says, if someone wants to write a patch to add quirks for
some set of devices then that patch would be welcome, the original
author has already stated that he does not intend to pursue this
further.

Adding such a quirk seems like a relatively easy first job for someone
new to this sort of development so if you want to take a stab at it I'd
be happy to try and give some pointers.
