Ian has made his point clear: you're likely experiencing a tool chain problem. So if you must use 4.2 then try a early release of ubuntu, 12.04 might help. Anyway, I think 4.4 should be good on 14.04.

Or try Debian, my Debian Wheezy runs 4.1.2 well.
