Hi all,

As promised, this is a short summary of a long thread about
documentation licenses: https://marc.info/?l=xen-devel&m=157071096324029

The two main licenses under discussion are:

- CC-BY-4 (Creative Commons) https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/
- BSD-2-Clause https://opensource.org/licenses/BSD-2-Clause

The main difference between the two is that CC-BY-4 requires people to
give credit to the original authors. Some of the Xen maintainers would
like CC-BY-4 to be used for Xen docs because they should encourage more
contributions, and in general it is a license designed for docs.

Instead, BSD-2-Clause doesn't require to give credits to the authors of
the doc and it was designed for code. However, it is already used for
Xen header files. If we want to copy lines from a header file to a
document, BSD-2-Clause would have to be used.

Interestingly, BSD-2-Clause and CC-BY-4 are *not* compatible. It is not
possible to move stuff back and forth between documents under the two
licenses.

The thread is a long read but the conclusion at the time was that the
Xen docs would remain under CC-BY-4, while it would probably make more
sense to license the nascent Xen safety docs under the BSD-2-Clause:

Cheers,

Stefano
