so one thing wrong in the article - I don't know how many people read ich Steven's Unix Networked Programming (I'd just use his examples) but TCP/IP Illustrated Volume 2 is far more useful since its a walkthrough of the BSD kernel stack (amongst other things) and contains MANY fine lessons on how to write gofaster code
(one example is TCP/P header prediction for example in the packet receive code of TCP, and another is the use of PCTCB caches...
