I just spoke to Paul on the phone. He reports that:

 * Paul found a BIOS update for the Dells which he hopes will fix the
problem. Personally I think it is more likely to be a hardware
   problem with the CMOS battery.

But, we agreed that when Paul has finished updating the BIOS we
will put the machines back and see if the problem is cured. (The
most practical approach for testing this is probably to simply put
   them back into service.)

Paul will email us to let us know when they're ready for Credativ
   to collect and put back.

 * Paul also mentioned the HP machine, merlot0. I'm afraid that I
didn't quite catch what he said about this, but I think he
suggested he had replaced the CMOS battery and that therefore this
machine is (or will soon be) also hopefully fixed.

Thanks,
Ian.
