indeed.  booting up dom0 clean, then bringing up domU with no vif's defined in
the .conf file creates a running domU with no kernel faults.  manually
triggering 

xm network-attach <domU_name> [options]

triggers fault.  maybe this will help testing.  i have a new box here I am able
to help troubleshoot this issue with for a couple weeks.  let me know if i can
help generate some debug info.
