Hi Rune, 

Concerning point 1, an important point is that it is just the kernel
that needs to be ported (I don't know about the Windows XP port). And
most of the patches are in the architecture dependent or memory parts
which means a lot of other kernel patches can coexist with the patch! 
(i.e., not as bad as it sounds)
