Function keys send sequences of characters. There's an old question: how do I tell if you typed the individual characters for the key, or you hit the key? curses has a test for distinguishing a function key (e.g. up arrow) from the characters typed individually, which boils down to 'what's the inter-character delay'. If the delay is small, then it's the function key, else it's the human typing.
