I don't know how it could ever have worked for you in the past -- the crash is occurring because the kernel is compiled with 3DNOW-specific instructions (in particular a 3dnow-specific PREFETCH instruction) that Intel CPUs simply do not support. The system therefore crashes with an entirely legitimate "invalid opcode" fault. If you really want a kernel that will work on both Cyrix/C3 and P3, try selecting "Pentium-Pro" as processor type.
