I didn't/don't think this should be necessary, given my experience with initrds in other environments. Please feel free to use it as a working case study, if you will. initrd is actually a fairly complicated process. The idea is to allow an executable (/linuxrc) to run prior to init to allow distros to do things like load modules. When /linuxrc exits the normal init process is continued. What makes things a little more complicated is that initrd does some weird things with remounting the root file system and has some subtle side-effects.
