Aha! Thanks – that seems to be the magic I was missing… it’s unfortunate that the OPROFILE doesn’t appear commented out in the default config file or I would have found it earlier!

I think you probably do not have oprofile module configured in your kernel.

Configuring and installing oprofile 0.9.2 just gives you the user level tools. To get the kernel module you need to compile and install the kernel with the right CONFIG options:

CONFIG_PROFILING=y

CONFIG_OPROFILE=m
