kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.31-rc8 ro root=/dev/sdc2 console=ttyS0,9600

That should definitely work for baremetal kernel. Does your kernel have
serial support built-in? 

Are you sure your serial port settings on the other computer are ok? 
Try using "minicom" and playing with the different flow control
settings.. (no flow control / hardware flowcontrol / xon,xoff)
