I don't know if it helps, but you could use 
-Wno-error=unused-but-set-variable instead of -Wno-unused-but-set-variable 
(ie. still log it but don't treat it as an error). I have been using the 
patch

in Fedora which includes the option, and it builds for me (on F14, F15 and 
RHEL6).
