you are probably looking for xl (or xm) save -c:

Usage: xl [-v] save [options] <Domain> <CheckpointFile> [<ConfigFile>]

Save a domain state to restore later.

Options:

-h  Print this help.
-c  Leave domain running after creating the snapshot.
