Such a toolstack would always write the node to one value or the other. The case I'm referring to is when the domain was created by one version of libxl (which doesn't write the node) but is now being acted upon by a new one (which does write & check it), perhaps due to an intervening upgrade. There is no way to know which version of qemu was used in this scenario but I question whether it is something we should support in any case (at least outside of stable branches).
