For rhel5 you might also want this patch:

"libfsimage: add ext4 support for CentOS 5.x":
http://xenbits.xen.org/hg/xen-unstable.hg/rev/98e1ba6a672a

which adds pygrub ext4 support on el5 using e4fsprogs.
