This seems like a useful tool in theory and Don has patched out the
worst of the behaviours which at least I found annoying in practice. If
there are other such behaviours we can patch those too as we find them.

I'm inclined to apply this but since it not just a tools thing I don't
want to just go ahead and commit it. So I'll give it a few days for
objections before go ahead.

If/when we go ahead, we should remember to update the Submitting patches
wiki page.
