Thanks for the suggestion.
I upgraded to testing (xen, kernels, and userspace tools)
a few days ago.
Now X runs a lot more stably, but still the symptoms
(garbage on screen, client crash) occur, very occasionally. 

DRI is disabled because it caused an instant reboot of the entire
machine as X starts.
