Yep, I don't blame you for wanting to avoid NFS...  According to Yvette, it 
does work now, so it's strange that it's broken for you.

Can you look at the link posted:
http://www.option-c.com/xwiki/Xen_CDROM_Support

And see if it helps any?  If you still can't make it work, can you please post 
your config file?
