So, I figured out my own problem. 

I had a typo in my xen configuration file:

To set up the disks I used:
disk = ['phy:vg/mg-gws_data,sda1,w' ,'phy:vg/mg-gws_swap,sda2,2']
notice the "2"------------------------------------------------^

it should have been "w"
disk = ['phy:vg/mg-gws_data,sda1,w' ,'phy:vg/mg-gws_swap,sda2,w']
