just to follow up on this thread. The problem turned out to be related to the fact that I did not have the proper files in /etc/udev/rules.d (as discussed later in this thread). I am still using the 4.03 gcc (which is default in Debian etch) and everything is working fine with that. Thanx for the help Mark.
